Consumers saved $500 million More in 2011 by Couponing

2011 Couponing Facts from NCH Marketing (a subsidiary of RedPlum parent Valassis Communications)

  • $470 billion of coupon value was offered by consumer package good (CPG) to U.S. consumers last year of which $4.6 billion coupons were redeemed, up 12.2% from 2010, and 58.6% higher than five years ago. Consumers saved $500 million more in 2011 from 2010.
  • 305 billion coupons were distributed down 13.1% from 2010 mainly attributed to few coupons in the Grocery segment. 
  • The top 5 categories of coupon distribution in 2011 was 1) Hair Care,  2) Eye Care, 3) Candy & Gum, 4) cosmetics, and 5) Butter & Margarine
  • To suppress redemption, marketers increased the use of multiple purchase requirement offers to 27% of all coupons distributed, up 2% from 2010. And, expiration dates were further shortened averaging 9.9 weeks from drop date to expiration or 5% less time than previous years. 
  • NCH estimates 76% more products were sold with coupons over the course of recent changes in consumer behavior since 2007.
  • The Top 10 Retail Coupon Redeemers in 2011 were  1) Walmart  2) Kroger 3) Walgreens 4) Target 5) Publix  6) Defense Commissary  7) Ahold  8) SuperValue 9) Meijer 10) CVS
